Professor Toft Knee Center in Munich

It’s been awhile since I wrote about dr. Jurgen Toft and his Alpha Klinik, so here is a quick summary (older post were written in Slovene). But just before I go there, we have to get updated with the Knee Center. A year ago institution was called Alpha Klinik. Some things went wrong¹ and things went their own way. Profesor Toft opened a new, his own clinic called Knee Center. The clinic is also located in Munich.

My mother had a severe damaged cartilage on her right knee². It didn’t happen through the night but it was a slowly and more and more often, a painful process linked with sport activities; mainly tennis and skiing. Both sports are well know to be knee killers and so my mother wasn’t any exception. Precisely a year ago my mother was almost completely immovable. She couldn’t walk, drive a vehicle or even sit. All she was able to, was lying in pain an waiting for a little miracle to happen. That is, after Slovenian doctors³ said there is nothing there is to be done. It was said (between the words⁴) that the only remaining option was a total knee prothesis…

… for those of you who are familiar with this practice, you know that a complete knee prothesis means the end of your knee. And that could also mean the end of the one’s leg and his ability to be mobile – to walk. Specially if a person⁵ is younger than the age of 60-65.

After a little bit a family drama I came home to my wife, sat down behind a computer and started to google for an unknown. I just couldn’t accept the fact given to us by our medical practice⁶. After all we live in the 21st of century. After a couple od days of searching I found an Alpha Klinik in Munich. There Dr. Jurgen Toft performs a pioneer medical procedure, called abrasion arthroplasty. On short, this process means he’s using mother cells to make new, fibre cartilage which with time obtains almost identical structure and purpose of the natural one.

After two surgeries and a few thousands kilometers to the North and back, my mother now sits, drives a car and walks again. Her perfomance is fantastic and for someone who has been dismissed from regular medical treatment this is ecstatic. Not good enough? Ok, what if I say she can really even dance a little bit? She can’t dance rock’n'rool⁷ but she can perform some unwieldy moves backs and forth. Depends on her mood and bio-weather conditions.

What about payment? It is expensive. Very. Rough calculations⁸ estimates a total around 40k € per knee. You have to start with basics diagnosis⁹ which gets around 500€ per knee. Than you get medical consultations and if this is it, you can appoint yourself for further consultations and surgeries.

What about insurance? This is really frustrating! On short, our orthopedists don’t recognize this procedure as credible. They even states (with living and walking proof!?) this procedure can’t help, won’t help and is joke and a farce. So much for professionalism and super educated doctors. We filled the lawsuit.

I know I’ve promised pictures and everything from the operations but to tell you the truth, I’ve lost them. Not the original ones though, but those already converted and prepared for publishing. As I mentioned in the past, dr. Toft’s services are at the highest level expected. Among other things you get all the medical clearances burned on a digital media such as DVD or CDs. You even get recordings of the actual surgeries. All in all, none of the media is captured in traditional¹⁰ media containers and has to be additionally processed. That means spare time, which I don’t have.

So, after a year of surgeries we’re going back for an optional examination. We received a letter of invitation and although my mother feels fine, we’re curious. The trip is scheduled for next month. Stay tuned.
